Nathun Finkhouse has been arting it up since he was just a kid. His oldest memories are of drawing pictures in first grade rather than doing his school work. Instead of scolding Nathun, his teacher encouraged his passion which led to a lifelong pursuit of artistic expression.
Aside from art classes in school, Nathun also took individualized lessons from a local artist from age 12 to 18. From there, Nathun earned a degree in Art Education at the University of Idaho.
Since moving to Vancouver, WA, Nathun has been an active member of the Mosaic Arts Alliance, Southwest Washington Watercolor Society, and Society of Washington Artists where he participates in local and regional art exhibits and has won numerous awards.
Nathun is well versed in Drawing, Watercolor, and Acrylic. He also has some experience with pen and ink, pastel, oil, and airbrushing.
Nathun is originally from central Idaho where he grew up surrounded by beautiful landscapes and rustic scenes of old cars and abandoned barns. These images and memories greatly informed Nathun’s artistic vision as can be observed in many of his paintings.
Nathun is interested in the abandoned nature of rustic scenes where human-made objects are slowly being reclaimed by the surrounding land. Over time, nothing is spared by the relentless and resilient quality of the natural world. Many of his pieces feature that moment in which the grass, trees, or earth itself has practically become one with the inorganic object in the scene. Something like a dilapidated barn can appear as organic and unruly as a pine tree or unkempt field of grass and weeds.
Nathun’s style can be described as realistic with hints of impressionism. With every piece, Nathun is looking to find a balance between reproducing a particular scene and enhancing the moment through vivid color, high contrast, and unique perspectives.
